2008 will see people all over the UK making New Years resolutions. Many of these are made in the emotional charged atmosphere of New Years Eve and are broken within the first couple of days in January. Many people will be trying to lose some weight in the New Year and there will be a number of weight loss books and products hitting market.
CHARLIE WALDUCK - lost over 30 stone in just 20 months through healthy eating and light moderate exercise. He has managed to maintain the weight loss over the last 2 years, although he still struggles at times with his food addiction.
CHARLIE - has appeared on TV shows all over the World - notably on The ITV Flagship Daytime Show ‘THIS MORNING’ - Where his moving story was first aired and his amazing progress monitored over a 2 year period.
WEIGHT LOSS ACHIEVEMENT AND METHODS
Charlie did not have any surgical help to achieve his extraordinary and life-saving loss of weight - This was due to pure courage and willpower and the simple Plan Of Action devised together with TV Celebrity Doctor - Chris Steele, who mentored Charlie and captivated viewers with Charlie’s startling achievement ( a UK Slimming Record) This understandably has attracted soaring ratings whenever he has featured as it is a True Human Interest Saga - and relative to one of Britain’s growing endemics - OBESITY.
DR CHRIS STEELE (MBE) Dr Chris, who has just be awarded an MBE in the New Year honours list discussed the problems Charlie had. To put things in perspective - Charlie was so overweight he could barely lift himself out of his chair at the height of his problem and together they decided on a course of action. ITV THIS MORNING filmed, documented and broadcast the evolvement of this Plan to millions of viewers over a 2 year period and the TV appearances and Charlie’s Story continue to this day - Charlie recently featured in a 5 part series on THIS MORNING – (October 30th – November 27th)
EASIEST EVER WEIGHT LOSS PLAN!
Together Dr Chris and Charlie devised a Simple and Straight Forward and easy to follow plan. - if this could work for Charlie, who weighed well in excess of 600 pounds it can work for anyone.
SUCCESS
Both Dr Chris and Charlie are very proud to have broadcast the whole moving episode on TV - as it became a verified success story witnessed by millions of people - and one of the main aspects of this story is that this is not a gimmick or a miracle cure - it is about effort and pride and maintaining realistic small goals to finally achieve the Final result.
THE FUTURE
Charlie is now recognized almost everywhere he goes and people recognize his courage and endeavour in his achievements, though most are unaware that he has a constant battle to maintain his determination and avoid his cravings and addiction for food - both Dr Chris and Charlie are now keen to cast Charlie in the Role of Mentor to people in need of guidance, after all who better to advise on this issue? - Charlie has lived to tell the tale and continues to fight the battle …
Dr Chris says: “Charlie is an inspiration to anyone needing to lose weight, his sheer determination is astounding. I am proud to have been a part of Charlie’s weight loss. My advice to Charlie was to follow a very simple low fat diet and get out and start to walking.”
Here are Charlie’s top tips for getting started this New Year. Charlie is available for press and magazine interviews and TV and Radio appearances. The three golden rules:1. Walking at least 10,000 a day. (Or at least building towards this)
2. Eating Meals with less than 3% in fat whilst also keeping an eye on the calories as well. There is a very important thing to remember here and that is keeping one eye on the calorie content. For instance Jelly babies contain no fat but they contain plenty of sugar.
3. Not eating after 7pm in the evening. This is disputed by many but for me having a curfew in an evening is a great rule.
For many people, the longest journey starts with the smallest step, my good friend and mentor Dr Chris Steele told me that on the day we first met. At that time I weighed 45 stone and had contemplated ending my own life, I did not know if I had a future let alone what that future would hold. If you need to lose weight then we are all guilty of putting it off. I will do it tomorrow is what you have probably told yourself, but then when tomorrow comes there is always another excuse or reason to put it off. I know because I have been there. At 45 stones I was probably one of the biggest men in the UK and yes I had been on more diets than you can shake a bread stick at. I had tried them all and failed at them all. When I first met the good doctor he told me “Charlie today this is the biggest you will ever be and from now on you will go down in weight everyday … a bit at a time”
WHERE DO I START
When you weigh such a large amount it I difficult to comprehend just how much weight you need to lose. You have to take in small manageable chunks because lets face it Rome was not built in a day. This is what I did, with a little help from my friends and in just over 2 years I had lost 30 stones and was competing in the London Marathon.
Here are some simple steps to GETTING STARTED
1. It is natural for the body to lose weight if you eat less and do more. Every single diet plan in the world is based broadly on this principle. It really is as simple as this. It is important therefore to try and a find a plan that works for you. Dr Chris Steele and I sat down and put together a plan whereby I would concentrate on low fat foods (less than 3%); having structure to the day and eating nothing after a certain time (7pm) and trying to walk as much as I could. (These are the three golden rules) If you are concerned then do seek medical advice but don’t use this as an excuse for not making that first important step.
2. Portion control was very important to me; I knew if I was cooking a big meal I would likely eat it. I therefore had, as my main meal, one of the choices of low fat ready meals available from all the major supermarkets. There is also recent evidence that these are being improved by the industry. For me they were perfect I had that element of portion control and I could see by reading the label that they passed the test when it came to 3% in fat or less. I was also on a limited budget and the low fat ready meals were great value for money. 23% of us eat these ready meals so it is in the interest of the manufacturers, especially given the recent bad press than certain fats have been given, to improve these meals.
3. Get weighed, what can be measured can be managed. There is no point starting on a weight losing plan unless you get weighed first. This is very important. Always weigh at the same time, on the same scales, wearing more or less the same clothes. Remember on Day 1 this is the heaviest you will ever be. That’s what Dr Chris told me.
4. Do a diet diary; write down your daily thoughts and feelings. Maybe write down what you have eaten, what you have enjoyed what exercise you have done. I did a spreadsheet on the computer and it was like my own personal weekly magazine of my progress. It really did help and will help you too.
5. Make a wish list. We all need to have dreams so write down everything you want to achieve in life and focus on these things. Make sure they are realistic and achievable - not all of us can win gold at the Olympics, in fact very few of us can
6. Get a pedometer and get moving. A pedometer is a small device that fits onto your belt which records the number of steps you make. Write down on a daily basis how many you have done (put it in the diary). Don’t worry if you don’t achieve the magic 10,000 on the first day, when I first stated I could hardly make 500.
7. Make a plan and stick to it. Having some kind of structure to the day is very important. Make sure the plan is realistic also. Some of the popular diets are not sustainable. This is an eating plan for life. We will look at the nuts and bolts of this later on. If your eating plan involves 6 hours of preparation every day is it going to last? If it involves eating food you don’t like, however good these may be for you, will it last? The answer to both questions is probably NO. Remember, and I will repeat this because it is important, when you are full leave it, it is better in the waste than on the waist.
Chew all your food
Leave what ever you don’t want
Leave gaps between courses
Drink plenty of water before meals
Fill up with healthy soup
8. Try to avoid silly faddy diets they simple don’t work. Healthy eating, walking and a positive mental attitude are the best way for long term weight loss. Think to yourself this is not a diet it is an eating plan for life. Remember that everything in moderation is fine, BUT if you can’t open a packet of biscuits without eating them all then just don’t buy them in the first place.
9. Nobody else can do this for you – it is up to you. Everyone is looking for an easy way to lose the weight or someone or something to blame for being overweight. 99% of people who are overweight eat too much and do too little exercise, some are more prone than others, and some will find it difficult (I know I still do). But for most of us we control our own destiny. So stay positive and if you feel like giving up look at the diary and old pictures and see how far you have come.
10. Finally set yourself small weight loss targets and then treat yourself when you achieve these. Treats should be non-food such as having a holiday, getting your hair done or buying some new clothes. Break the weight you need to lose into small manageable chunks; it does not seem that frightening then.
Take it slowly and good luck.
